Polish Education Committee in Scotland

Between 2014 and 2018 APPLA supported actively the Polish Education Committee (PEC) in Scotland at the Consulate of the Republic of Poland in Edinburgh and the Cross-Party Group on Poland in the Scottish Government, lobbying for the introduction of the Polish language as a high-school examination subject on par with the English system.

During that time numerous meetings were hold with officials from the Scottish Government, Polish government, organisations such as The General Teaching Council for Scotland, COSLA, SCILT and various universities at Scotland and in Poland. Yet, despite the efforts and the fact that Polish is the second most commonly spoken language in the UK (and Scotland) after English, it has not been introduced as an examination subject and no support for the Polish-speaking minorities is offered in Scottish schools.

During the course of PEC activities two publications were prepared:

  • „Polish Language Learning in Scotland. Key facts and opportunities” (prepared by Dr Anna Martowicz and Dr Andrew Roach)
  • „Learning Polish in Scotland. Information Brochure” (prepared by Dr Beata Kohlbek)
